If you're installing a new stereo in your Toyota, you may need to get rid of your factory amp if the vehicle is equipped. The factory amp is located below the factory stereo in most Toyota's
These are the wire harnesses made to integrate an aftermarket stereo into the factory wire harnesses, Toyota has been using these same harnesses since the late 80's (Metra 70-1761). The factory wire harnesses that will be connected to theses will be located at the factory amp.
The silver box with the heat sinks on the sides is the factory amp. It is normally mounted with several phillips screws.
Use the harnesses on the bottom of the factory amp. They should fit and connect to the aftermarket Metra 70-1761 harness and allow you to bypass the factory amp.
You may be wondering why you would want to eliminate this amp. Well there are a couple of reasons. If the factory amp is bad, having to purchase and find another one can be expensive and not really worth it. You can buy a new aftermarket stereo with a built in amp, including all the bells and whistles, for around $100 and eliminate the factory amp. Or if you are planning on replacing the factory stereo with a new aftermarket stereo that doesn't have the proper pre out to integrate the factory amp, this will solve that problem as well. Lastly, you may get engine noise when integrating the new stereo into the factory amp. Removing the factory amp and powering the vehicles' speakers directly off the new car stereo will normally eliminate the noise issue. Hope this helps!

I have a 2002 Tundra that I have replaced the 2din headunit with an Ouku gps/dvd unit. All the wires are connected except for 1 wire that was plug into the amp (which I removed) it is a white with blue stripe that was part of the bigger plug for the amp. The power ant wire and reverse wire and the p center and p brake wires are not connected. All speakers and acc and battery and ground are connected but I have no sound at all in any function (which all work). Have I missed anything in the wiring. I am old school for the wiring so I have no ISO harness just wire to wire. Any help would be greeted with much gratitude.
ReplyDeleteHello Bruce,
DeleteHope this message finds you still needing the information. I just now installed Ouku in my Tundra 2000. Had to hack the amplifier out as it caused enormous amount of noise. Per instructions - to remove the screws, but good luck with that - screwdriver cannot reach them at such angle. I had to use hacksaw with metal blade to cut the amp support brackets and than pulled it all out. Thought about returning it before came across this page.
Here is what I found on the web and confirmed via my installation today - it's all correct (the wiring that goes into the amp):
Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Blue/Yellow
Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Gray
Car Radio Ground Wire: Brown
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Green
Car Stereo Dimmer Wire: N/A

Car Stereo Amp Trigger Wire: N/A

Left Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Violet
Right Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Green

Hi Bruce,
DeleteThis may be a blast from the past since you posted this several months ago, but did you find a fix to your issue? I'm having a similar problem. I wired everything up using the new harness and bypassing the amp, but I have no accessory power.I have 12V on the constant (yellow) but the red is dead. I'm wondering if this is because I bypassed the amp. Thanks in advance!
How did you unscrew the two phillips head screws on the sides of the amp when it is connected to the truck? I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra with the same dash setup and it seems near impossible to unscrew them since there is very little free space inbetween.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone have an answer to this?
DeleteThank you for the tip on the amplifier! I was having a heck of a time finding the correct wiring harness adapter for the back of the OEM radio. I didn't realize there was an amp and another set of connectors below.
ReplyDeleteHow do you get to the amp to get it out? As a previous comment stated, there isn't room to get a screwdriver in there to undo the screws. Any help would be much appreciated!
